Being out of position is frustrating more than anything else.
It's where you find yourself before a potential crisis. Unlike a crisis, where immediate safety precautions are required to regain control, nothing terrible has happened yet but you find yourself in an unfamiliar and sometimes unfriendly or uncomfortable position, sometimes you might even feel forced into a corner.
An example on the golf course might be, short-siding yourself behind a green side trap with little green between you and the flag, or maybe you were a little aggressive with some financial decisions and you find yourself having to ‘sell to soon’ or relinquish a point of strength. You may have wandered into a personal relationship which you’re regretting or hitched your creative engine to a carriage that as it turns out, you’ve no energy for.
Either way finding yourself out of position is something we all experience that’s usually caused by an unforeseen hazard, a momentary lapse in concentration or a lack of planning.
You’ve now recognized you're in uncharted waters. You might trick yourself into thinking that something overly extraordinary or even miraculous is required, but this moment of exposed vulnerability really allows for one of the most profound learning experiences there is to be had.
First thing’s first; how did we get here? Knowing how you ended up in an undesirable position is key to understanding the best mode of action and there’s usually a few key indicators which allow you to assess this small misstep.
I can go first.
